The outcome of the recent U.S. presidential election has given Iran hope, according to one former Trump administration official.
Newsmax reports former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell as opining that Iran is very much looking forward to Joe Biden’s administration.
“I think the Iranian regime is very much looking to test any administration that comes after Donald Trump,” Grenell said.
Biden’s approach
Grenell, during the interview with Newsmax, talked about the approach that he expects Biden to take with regard to Iran, basing his opinion on statements made by Biden and his transition team.
“The Biden team has already said that they’re going to govern Iran by consensus, and what that means is, it’s not going to be America first,” Grenell said. “It’s not our policy anymore to put our national security and our American people first because ‘consensus’ means that you’re actually just gonna work with other countries to cut the position in half.”
Grenell continued: “It’s a real scary concept, to be honest. It sounds so nice, ‘consensus, that we’re all gonna try to get along,’ but the fact of the matter is, each country is pushing their own policy.”
Trump’s approach
Grenell contrasted Biden’s approach to Iran with the approach that President Trump has taken over the past four years.
“[Iran knows] exactly what President Trump is going to do,” Grenell said. “They fear him, and that’s the perfect position to be in.”
“We squeezed them on sanctions,” Grenell added. “We called them out on their human rights abuses. We pressured the world to stop doing business with them and to abide by our American sanctions. And we took out some of their leaders.”
Looking forward
Indeed, in the final days of President Trump’s administration, Iran is already growing bolder with the prospect of a Biden administration.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani recently threatened the life of President Trump, saying that he “would be dead” in a few days. This comes as we approach the anniversary of the U.S.’s takedown of Iran Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani. In addition, Iran announced a plan to enrich uranium up to 20 percent “as soon as possible.”
It’s clear, as Grenell pointed out, that Iran is gearing up to test America’s new leadership. And, if Biden and his team don’t issue a firm response, then the world is going to be in the same dangerous situation that it was in back when Barrack Obama was president.
