British tabloid the Daily Mail released photos this week of Barack and Michelle Obama kayaking in Hawaii.
The former president and first lady reportedly hit the water in Kailua Bay, “near their old ‘winter White House.'”
The Daily Mail‘s Jennifer Smith said the “sporty” former first lady “appeared to be putting in most of the work while her former President husband sat back and took in the sights, before eventually lending a hand then hauling their kayak to shore.”
Smith said Barack Obama “looked happy and relaxed in a pair of dark swim shorts, sunglasses and a baseball hat.” She characterized his wife as “au natural with no make-up and her hair tied off of her face.”
A life of luxury
According to Smith, the pair’s kayaking spot is located near a compound called Plantation Estate. It was often rented by the Obamas during their time in Washington.
Smith said it was unclear whether the family had once again rented Plantation Estate. However, their recent acquisition of a new Hawaiian property suggests they won’t need to rent accommodations in the future.
According to American Luxury, the former first family is building a new palatial home where the 1980s television show Magnum PI was filmed.
Located at Waimanalo Bay on the island of Oahu, the home is expected to have two swimming pools. The land alone reportedly cost $8.7 million.
The Hawaiian hideaway won’t be the Obamas’ only oceanfront mansion, however; the couple also was said to have purchased an $11.8 million estate on Massachusetts’ Martha’s Vineyard last year, American Luxury reported.
An “aggressive” plan
At first glace, those purchases seem odd, given that both Barack and Michelle Obama have spoken worriedly about rising sea levels due to climate change. In 2013, the then-president tweeted that the U.S. needed to “act” on climate change because the phenomenon was “potentially threatening U.S. cities.”
Seven years later, Barack Obama’s two-time running mate Joe Biden is teeing up an “aggressive” plan for “environmental justice” and a “clean energy revolution.”
“We’re in a crisis,” Biden said this week, according to the BBC. “Just like we need to be a unified nation to respond to COVID-19, we need a unified national response to climate change.”
