A Trump-friendly newspaper is calling on President Donald Trump to throw in the towel.
The right-leaning New York Post chastised the president in a strongly worded editorial for encouraging an “undemocratic coup” by challenging Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s putative victory.
Stop “dark charade”
The Post endorsed Trump for the presidency and played a prominent role in the final weeks before Election Day when it publicized damning emails about Biden and his son’s business deals. The paper is known for its history with the president, whose exploits in New York once filled the city’s tabloids.
But the cover of Monday’s paper features an image of a frustrated-looking Trump with the phrase, “Stop the Insanity.”
An editorial titled, “Give it up Mr. President — for your sake and the nation’s,” implores Trump to abandon a “dark charade” and “undemocratic coup.”
The paper said Trump had “every right” to investigate voter fraud, but that his efforts have come up empty. The editorial places the paper at odds with Trump and the majority of Republican voters, who agree with Trump that the election was “rigged” in favor of Biden.
“You have tweeted that, as long as Republicans have ‘courage,’ they can overturn the results and give you four more years in office,” the paper said. “In other words, you’re cheering for an undemocratic coup.”
NY Post: focus on Jan. 5
Trump has called on Republicans in Congress to protest the Electoral College vote, which went to Biden, on Jan. 6 — a day after Georgia’s runoff elections in the Senate.
The paper warned that Trump’s “obsession” with voter fraud could jeopardize his legacy and the Republican Party’s slim Senate majority. “Stop thinking about Jan. 6. Start thinking about Jan. 5,” the paper said.
“Securing the Senate means securing your legacy,” the paper added. “You should use your considerable charm and influence to support the Georgia candidates, mobilizing your voters for them. Focus on their success, not your own grievances, as we head into the final week.”
By acting like “the King Lear of Mar-A-Lago, ranting about the corruption of the world,” Trump is helping Democrats write him off as a “one-term aberration,” the editorial claimed.
“We understand, Mr. President, that you’re angry that you lost. But to continue down this road is ruinous,” the paper said.
