Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has updated his audience throughout the year on the status of his ongoing battle with cancer.
In a segment of his show on Wednesday, he offered a heartfelt message of gratitude to his devoted fans for their support throughout a tumultuous year.
“Extremely fortunate and lucky”
Limbaugh told his audience that he did not expect to survive 2020 and thanked listeners for helping him make it to what he confirmed would be his last broadcast of the year.
Although he said he always becomes reflective around this time of year, his constant reminder that he has an “expiration date” due to his illness has allowed him to focus on the things that are truly important.
“I’ve had a year now to reflect on the things that really matter, a year to reflect on the things that are completely relevant and important to me,” Limbaugh said. “And all of you are in that large conglomeration of people and things that are very important to me.”
Reflecting on the past year, he recalled the experience of receiving a terminal diagnosis in January as well as accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump a short time later.
Limbaugh said he considered himself “extremely fortunate and lucky” for his blessings, going on to thank his wife Kathryn for her continued love and support.
“A sizable and growing and still-beating heart”
“I wasn’t expected to be alive today,” he said. “I wasn’t expected to make it to October, and then to November, and then to December. And yet, here I am, and today, got some problems, but I’m feeling pretty good today.”
Despite being in “denial” when he first received the news, Limbaugh said that being confronted with death made it easy for him to become “self-absorbed” and prompted him to change his perspective.
The support he received made him realize “what love really is” while experiencing the “goodness of people.”
He added that many people “never get told” that they “have an expiration date” so they miss the lessons he has learned.
“My point in all of this today is gratitude,” Limbaugh concluded. “My point in all of this is to say thanks and tell everybody involved how much I love you from the bottom of a sizable and growing and still-beating heart.”
