Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) pushed back against attacks from MSNBC contributor Michael Eric Dyson on Friday after Dyson called him Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) “ventriloquist dummy” and suggested that Cameron was a “blackface” mouthpiece for the Senate majority leader.
“It’s trash,” Cameron told the Washington Examiner in an interview. “These are the same tired talking points that the left uses to attack Black folks who don’t think or act like them.”
Cameron added: “It’s disgusting that in 2020, this kind of shameful rhetoric is given a platform on national television. I count Leader McConnell as a friend and mentor and know he cares deeply about improving the lives of Black Americans.”
“Pulling those strings”
Cameron’s response came after Dyson said on The ReidOut Thursday night that the “real religion in America” is the “worship of whiteness,” even by a Black AG like Cameron.
“[McConnell] then puts forward a blackface representation in Daniel Cameron,” Dyson said, according to the Washington Examiner. “There’s a ventriloquism going on.”
He added: “Daniel Cameron’s mouth is moving. Mitch McConnell’s thoughts are coming through his tongue. This is the worst Geppetto we’ve ever seen, and pulling those strings is one of the worst white supremacists…we’ve seen in the last 15 years in American politics.”
Trump changes the game
But while Dyson thinks he was calling out McConnell’s racism, including Cameron in the attack was in itself racially charged. A longtime author of books about the Black experience in America and high profile Black Americans, Dyson might as well have been saying Cameron “ain’t Black” if he supports and agrees with McConnell.
It’s just as much an ugly slur when he says it as when Democratic nominee Joe Biden told New York radio host Charlamagne Tha God that voters “ain’t Black” if they were considering casting their ballots for President Donald Trump.
What’s more, the Democratic Party hasn’t helped Black Americans nearly as much as they claim to have. In fact, four years of Republican policies like America-first trade policies and tax cuts under President Trump resulted in the lowest unemployment rate among African Americans in history (pre-pandemic), and put more money into the hands of Black families than previous Democratic administrations had done.
Walking away
Black voters are beginning to realize this, and movements like Blexit and Walk Away are encouraging members of minority communities to keep their options open politically, and not just stick to a party line that may not be serving them anymore.
It terrifies the Democratic Party powers-that-be to think their stranglehold on the Black community could be loosening, which leads to diatribes like Dyson’s.
Dyson was on Joy Reid’s show to plug his new book Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America. One reviewer called the book a “timely” and “sweeping overview of racism in America.”
