There is widespread concern, especially among Republicans, that Democrat Joe Biden is going to undo the positive policies implemented by President Donald Trump. According to one former administration official, though, Biden will have a difficult time doing so in one key area.
Richard Grenell, the former acting Director of National Intelligence, recently expressed his belief that it is going to be very difficult for Biden to move away from President Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.
The debate has been won
Grenell’s comments came during a recent interview with Breitbart. Joel Pollak, the outlet’s editor-at-large asked Grenell what kind of threat Biden would pose to the president’s foreign policies.
“Let’s just be honest, the American First policy and the America First agenda that Donald Trump has unleashed is never going back to the bottle,” Grenell said. “We have won the debate on putting America first. No matter what [President-elect] Joe Biden or any future president does, they are not going to be able to put America second without a huge cry from the American people.”
The president’s “America first” policy has probably been his most important one. As the name suggests, it puts “the interests and security of the American people first,” especially economically. Accordingly, as Grenell points it, it has been a popular policy, which is going to make it difficult to get rid of.
“What Donald Trump has done with pushing the America First agenda is never going to cease,” Grenell said. “Future presidents may try to couch it a little bit differently, or they may try to roll it back, but they are going to be unable to do that.”
Trump did it
Grennell also explained an important change that has taken place under President Trump in the area of foreign policy.
“The State Department types — many bureaucrats, and I would say foreign policy experts in Washington — have taken advantage of the American people in that they go out and make these policies around the world, spend the American people’s money, and don’t ever come back to talk about what the American people are paying for, or what they’re doing around the world,” Grenell said.
This, however, according to Grenell, is no longer the case, and it’s all because of President Trump.
“The American people now see that their money must be spent wisely, including at the State Department, including for foreign policy,” Grenell said. “Experts in Washington have controlled and monopolized the spending, and tried to pretend like they’re smarter than everybody and really gone down the path of being a globalist for America.”
“Those days are over,” Grenell added. “The American people are much more engaged now because of Donald Trump, and they’re going to expect their government to put America first.”
Let’s hope that Grenell is right on this one.
