Federal judge okays Trump’s funding of the U.S.-Mexico border wall

The Trump administration scored a legal victory on Friday.

Newsmax reports that a federal judge has thrown out a case that challenged President Donald Trump’s decision to redirect money from the U.S. military to the Mexico border wall. 

A lack of standing

This case, in a way, goes back to the standoff that occurred between President Trump and Congress back in 2019. The reader may remember that the government ended up being shut down for more than a month after Congress refused to give the president the money he wanted to build the border wall.

Since the president didn’t get the money he needed, he subsequently decided to redirect $3.6 billion from the U.S. military to the border wall, and he did so by declaring a national emergency. This move was challenged by some groups from Texas. They argued that the president broke the law since the Constitution gives Congress sole control over federal spending.

Initially, a judge in El Paso, Texas, agreed. But, that decision was overturned by the federal appeals court in New Orleans. A three-judge panel ruled 2 to 1 that the Texas groups had no legal right to challenge the president’s decision.

Construction continues

President Trump, in 2016, ran on the promise to erect a U.S.-Mexico border wall to curb illegal immigration. The main problem for the president, as the above shows, has been obtaining the necessary funding to do so.

Just in October, Breitbart reported that the border wall, despite all of the roadblocks that the president has faced, has reached 371 miles long.

Mark Morgan, of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, posted on Twitter a time-lapse video of the construction. “371 miles of new border wall system. Every new mile leads to a: Decrease in drug & human smuggling, More secure border, Safer country.”

Now, in December, the wall is said to be around 400 miles long.

A look ahead

The question that arises is what will happen to the wall if Joe Biden does go on to become America’s next president. Biden said in August that he would stop construction, but, as ABC News points out, that will not be so easy to do.

As Breitbart reports, though, Biden has a plan that “promises to let companies import more visa workers, to let mayors import temporary workers, to accelerate the inflow of chain-migration migrants, to end migration enforcement against illegal aliens unless they commit a felony, and to accelerate the inflow of poor refugees to at least 125,000 per year.”

Such a plan would virtually take the wall down.
