Despite hopes of increasing their majority on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) saw a number of Democratic House candidates go down to defeat in the November election.
During an appearance on Fox News on Sunday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Democrats have good reason to be concerned.
“House GOP flipped at least 12 seats with major victories for incoming women, veterans and minorities,” McCarthy told Sunday Morning Futures host Maria Bartiromo.
Americans rejected Pelosi
McCarthy continued, “The Republican Party really made great gains, not only did we flip 12, there are four more races out there and we’re ahead in all four of them so I expect as the week progresses it will end up somewhere around 212, 213 seats, it only takes 218 for a majority.”
In contrast hard-left Democratic policy proposals that included defunding the police and socialized healthcare, the California Republican said that his party represented a very different vision.
“The American people have now rejected Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat socialist policy,” he said.
McCarthy said that the Republican Party campaigned “to make our streets safe, to defeat this virus, to rebuild our infrastructure, to end our dependency on the China infrastructure.”
“That’s the agenda we will move forward and we’ll be looking to get five to six more Democrats to join with us and then we’ll be able to run the floor,” he added.
Party moved too far left
McCarthy isn’t the only one to suggest that Democrats’ moving too far to the left played a role in how tight many of the House races were.
In a leaked post-election conference call covered by Breitbart News, several Democrats pushed back against the party’s progressive wing, arguing that a continued move in that direction will mean continued losses for the party.
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) said on the call that if Democrats “are going to run on Medicare for All, defund the police, socialized medicine, we’re not going to win.”
Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger agreed, saying that the party will “get f***ing torn apart” unless it moves away from support for defunding police and embracing socialism.
