Chinese leader Xi Jinping congratulates Biden on win, calls for ‘healthy and stable’ relations: Reports

Communist China’s leader, Xi Jinping, has congratulated Joe Biden for his putative victory in the presidential race.

According to ABC News, President Xi issued a statement on Wednesday calling for “win-win cooperation” between America and China after years of tensions under President Donald Trump.

“We hope the two sides will uphold the spirit of non-conflict and non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, will focus on cooperation, control differences and promote healthy and stable development of Chinese-U.S. relations,” the statement reportedly said.

“Beijing Biden”

The announcement comes with ironic suggestions for Biden’s critics, who have long said that Biden is compromised by America’s top global competitor.

On the campaign trail, Trump and his allies slammed “Beijing Biden” as a sell-out whose family got rich off of dubious foreign dealings, even as Biden presided over the offshoring of manufacturing jobs throughout his career. Trump rose to the White House assailing China for taking advantage of America for decades, and he spent a good part of the last four years waging a trade war to establish more favorable economic terms for American workers.

Contrasting with Trump’s truculence, Biden has taken a conciliatory tone on China for much of his career that continued into the recent past, even after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic caused so much devastation around the world.

Trump, meanwhile, has directly blamed China for unleashing the “plague” on the world, and other points of contention like Chinese surveillance, intellectual property theft, and China’s crackdowns on democracy protests in Hong Kong have brought tensions to a boil over the last four years, as Fox News noted.

Biden compromised?

Critics say that China is glad to have Biden in the White House, and Xi indeed appears to be hoping for a thaw in relations.

Talk of close “cooperation” between a Biden administration and China is liable to invite speculation in view of the Biden family’s global business deals, which came back into the spotlight before the election. A former associate of Hunter Biden’s, Tony Bobulinski, has said that Joe is “compromised” by his alleged past involvement in his son’s business in China.

“I just don’t see, given the history here and the facts, how Joe can’t be influenced in some manner based on the history that they have,” Bobulinski told Tucker Carlson in October, according to RealClearPolitics.

The Biden team acknowledged Xi’s congratulations in remarks to Reuters.

“We appreciate the congratulations from all world leaders who have conveyed them, including President Xi,” the former VP’s transition team said.
