With less than two weeks to go before Election Day, President Donald Trump is still working hard to deliver one of his core promises: keeping violent foreign criminals out of the United States.
The president issued a new rule that bans convicted felons and gang members from taking advantage of the asylum system, Breitbart reported.
Trump bans asylum for certain criminal aliens
The rule, which was issued by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, will go into effect on Nov. 20.
It bars from asylum people convicted of crimes involving gang activity, drunk driving, domestic abuse, identity fraud, public benefits fraud, illegal re-entry, smuggling, and possession or trafficking of a controlled substance or paraphernalia.
President Trump has long argued that the asylum system is rife with fraud and exploitation, and he has implemented a number of policies designed to cut back on claims, including the Remain in Mexico policy and a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rule that allows illegal immigrants to be immediately removed.
Many of Trump’s policies have been challenged and tied up in the courts, and the Supreme Court is planning to weigh in soon on his border wall and the Remain in Mexico policy. The latest asylum changes to keep criminals out of the country were immediately criticized by liberal activist groups.
“The administration is showing needless cruelty by layering these new bars on an asylum system which already has been decimated since Trump entered office,” said Heidi Altman, the National Immigrant Justice Center’s policy director.
Biden promises reversals
While Trump is looking to get immigration under control, his rival is promising to dismantle Trump’s legacy with a progressive stance on the issue.
Joe Biden plans to reverse Trump’s asylum changes, according to a report from the Center for Immigration Studies.
He also wants to halt construction of the border wall, raise refugee caps to 125,000 a year, and issue a blanket amnesty, as reported by the Heritage Foundation.
At the final presidential debate on Thursday night, Biden pledged in no uncertain terms to grant citizenship to 11 million people living in the country illegally.
“The fact is I’ve made it very clear within 100 days, I’m going to send to the United States Congress a pathway to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented people,” Biden said.
