Report: County lawmaker in New York faces charges over alleged attempt to trade drugs for sex

ABC News reported Wednesday that a prominent New York Democrat had been arrested for allegedly offering to trade opioids for sex.

Dr. William Spencer, a county-level lawmaker from Suffolk County’s 18th district, allegedly offered oxycodone to a woman during a prostitution sting. He was said to have been driving a vehicle belonging to the county at the time of his arrest.

Charges filed

Speaking with ABC News, Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Ward said that Spencer had been charged with criminal possession and sale in the third degree.

Ward indicated that additional evidence is expected to be recovered from Spencer’s cell phone.

The physician and local politician was released without bail on the condition that he surrender his passport and pistol permit, according to ABC.

“Justice will be served”

Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini issued a statement after Spencer’s charges were made public saying criminals in his jurisdiction will be held to account “no matter who they are.”

“The message here is that the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office will continue to work in partnership with all of the law enforcement agencies operating here on Long Island, including the DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] and members of the Long Island Heroin Task Force, to hold criminals accountable no matter who they are or what their walk of life is,” Sini said, according to ABC.

Sini also indicated that the “investigation is very much ongoing,” saying, “Justice will be served in this case.”

In a DEA press release, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said, “Law enforcement officers follow the evidence and this time, the evidence led to a prominent member of the community.”

“A rare combination”

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Spencer “was elected to represent Suffolk County’s 18th District in 2012.” The county’s website describes him as “a rare combination of scholar, medical doctor, reverend, and Suffolk County Legislator.”

The site adds: “He focuses on these passions in his life to try and better the lives of his friends, neighbors, and members of his community.”

In addition to his role as the county legislator, Spencer was notably listed in 2018 as a member of the Suffolk County Heroin and Opiate Epidemic Advisory Panel.
