In the run up to Election Day, many polls show President Donald Trump trailing his Democratic challenger Joe Biden, sometimes by a significant margin.
Yet one pollster has not only expressed disagreement with these findings but also leveled criticism at the people conducting them, the Daily Wire reported.
Mainstream polls are “garbage”
Jim Lee, CEO and founder of Susquehanna Polling and Research, earlier this month took part in a panel discussion broadcast by Pennsylvania’s WMFZ-TV. During his appearance, Lee dismissed many mainstream poll results as being “garbage.”
“I think it’s going to be a very close race,” Lee predicted. “I don’t see this as a blue wave. I don’t see Biden winning in the states Trump carried in 2016.”
“We are seeing other firms showing it tighten when, in my opinion, it’s been tight all along. I think Pennsylvania clearly is a battleground,” the pollster continued.
“I think the election is going to be decided by a very small electoral vote outcome,” he added. Although Lee refused to say for certain who will come out on top, he did state, “If the turnout is going to be what I think, Trump wins it.”
Lee contended that part of the reason why polls can’t accurately measure is the massive social disapproval that comes with voicing support for the president. “Many people called him (Trump) everything from a misogynist to a racist to everything in between,” he said, adding, “There are a lot of voters out there that don’t want to admit they are voting for a guy that has been called a racist; that submerged Trump factor is very real.”
Lee: Pollsters engaging in “voter suppression”
However, Lee also went on to speak of a more nefarious suspicion, specifically that polling firms are attempted to weight the scales in favor of former Vice President Biden.
“I called on the American Associated of Public Opinion Research to crack down on egregious polling, to tighten standards for firms that clearly don’t understand the landscape of Pennsylvania,” he complained.
“Our [data] showed the race a statistical tie when others had the race at 11 points,” Lee asked, “Do you think that’s voter suppression?”
“I’m sticking up for the industry,” the pollster insisted, stressing that “we need to crack down, someone needs to say this is out of control.”
Trump also complained about what he believes is inaccurate polling at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Friday. “[T]hey purposely make these polls phony. They’re phony polls,” Trump told the crowd.
