Did you ever think you would see the day when members of the American government would ask a foreign body to investigate their own government? Take a look at this.
Fox News reports that a group of House Democrats has now asked the United Nations to investigate allegations of abuse by the Homeland Security Department.
Among those leading the charge here are the freshman, far-left members of the so-called squad, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN).
The allegations
The group of House Democrats sent a five-page letter to the United Nations on Friday. Included was a list of reports from nonprofit organizations and news outlets claiming that the Department of Homeland Security has mistreated or coerced immigrants whom they have taken into custody.
“These allegations illustrate a clear pattern of alleged human rights violations by DHS,” the letter reads in part. “This pattern of behavior is perpetuated and encouraged by the consistent and unforgivable failure of the United States government and its institutions to take these allegations seriously by investigating them in a transparent, thorough, and impartial manner.”
Among the allegations are the sexual and physical abuse of immigrants in government custody. Also alleged is the forcible sterilization of detained immigrant women by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“When considered in the context of the United States’ long and shameful history of forcibly sterilizing incarcerated women and the numerous allegations of human rights abuses already leveled against DHS, the necessity of an independent investigation is clear,” the letter reads.
In addition to “the squad,” the letter was signed by Reps. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Veronica Escobar (D-TX), and Mark Pocan (D-WI), the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
The letter was addressed to Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
No response yet
The Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog is already investigating some of this, after allegations were made by a former nurse at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia. This investigation has yet to be concluded.
Democrats have long accused the Trump administration of mistreating detained illegal immigrants. The common claim is that President Donald Trump is responsible for the separation of children from their illegal immigrant parents. The president addressed such claims, most recently, at the final presidential debate, pointing out that it was the Obama-Biden administration who is actually responsible for such a policy. The president also said that detained immigrants “are so well taken care of,” that they’re “in facilities that were so clean.”
The United Nations has yet to respond to the House Democrats’ request.
