Biden says it’s ‘crass’ to go after families of political rivals

Democrat nominee Joe Biden has been hammered with questions and speculation about his role in son Hunter’s overseas business dealings for nearly two weeks and has yet to fully address the issue.

Joe Biden’s just attempted to avoid questions about his handling of his family’s overseas dealings while holding the office of vice president by characterizing the “attacks” on his family as “crass” and inappropriate.

Protect the children

Typically the children of presidents or high-profile politicians are off-limits in terms of political attacks, especially if they are underage. Biden appears to be attempting to invoke these norms to make the Hunter Biden scandal go away.

The pleas to leave his family alone, however, fall a little flat considering the fact that Hunter Biden is 50 years old and raked in millions of dollars in foreign cash based on his father’s name.

Biden appeared on the political podcast, “Pod Save America,” on Saturday, and the hosts of the show asked Biden why he hasn’t fired back at Trump with questions about his own family’s business deals during Donald Trump’s first term.

Biden responded that “It’s a specific decision. And I just think it’s crass.”

“Look, I’m running against Donald Trump, not his children,” Biden continued. “And the American people want to hear about their families. Not about Trump’s family or my family, although I’m very proud of my family. It’s just not how I was raised. It’s that basic. It’s Donald Trump.”

Biden is running as the candidate of decency, so pretending to avoid dragging Trump’s family into the political fray kills two birds with one stone: It makes him look like he’s taking the moral high ground in leaving Trump’s children out of the election, and gives him an excuse to dismiss concerns about his own family’s dealings.

Fact check

Of course, Biden’s moralizing is based on a lie. Biden has not hesitated to go after Donald Trump’s adult children when it’s politically convenient.

For instance, Biden has gone after President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, who has acted as an adviser to the president since his election in 2016.

Biden said last year that it’s “improper” for Trump to have his daughter and son-in-law in White House positions. “If I get elected president, my children are not going to have offices in the White House. My children are not going to sit in on Cabinet meetings,” Biden bragged.

Though Biden has pledged to keep family members out of the White House if elected, he has no problem allowing them to sit on the boards of foreign companies and using his famous name to collect paychecks from foreign entities.
