While comedian Chris Rock has frequently aimed his verbal barbs at Republicans, he made it clear this week that he believes Democratic Party leaders deserve much of the blame for the current crises facing the United States.
In Rock’s view, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and others in her party “let the pandemic come in” after falling short on promises regarding their failed impeachment effort, as reported by Breitbart. His remarks came during a recent interview with The New York Times, which also included significant criticism of the Trump administration.
“Never going to happen”
“It was totally up to Pelosi and the Democrats,” he said at one point.
Rock went on to assert that the party’s “thing” was impeachment, which he said “was never going to happen” and fizzled out around the same time the coronavirus threat was beginning to grow.
“You let the pandemic come in,” he scolded Democrats. “Yes, we can blame Trump, but he’s really the 5-year-old.”
Despite his criticism of the party, he made it clear that he is no fan of the president. The comic’s comparison of Trump to a child continued in some detail.
“Did you ever see that movie The Last Emperor, where like a 5-year-old is the emperor of China?” Rock asked. “There’s a kid and he’s the king.”
“Only lead in theory”
He tied the narrative to modern-day America, reiterating that he believes it is “the Democrats’ fault” because they “knew that the emperor was 5-year-old” and could “only lead in theory.”
In such situations, Rock theorized that there is “usually an adult who’s like, ‘OK, this is what we’re really going to do.'”
Of course, a more objective look at the overall response to the COVID-19 pandemic would show Democratic officials bear some burden for dropping the ball on various levels of government.
For example, the Justice Department is investigating policies in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan that required nursing homes to admit patients who had been infected with the virus, as Fox News reported last month.
While Rock’s motivation was certainly not to harm the Democratic Party’s chances in November’s election, his decision to rhetorically hold the party accountable for its actions this year could spark even more backlash during the final weeks before Election Day.
