Even as polls show Americans favor Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s stance on national protests over President Donald Trump’s record, some pundits are predicting that the former vice president’s permissive rhetoric will backfire on Election Day.
As conservative columnist Star Parker argued this weekend during an appearance on the Fox News Channel, Trump might be headed for a landslide re-election victory as destructive demonstrations impact communities across the nation.
“Anti-American sentiments”
She made the prediction as part of a discussion of the 2020 race during a segment of Fox & Friends Weekend.
Asserting that rioters have been emboldened by “anti-American sentiments” and believe that the nation is “evil,” Parker opined that such beliefs will not resonate with the overwhelming majority of voters.
“They are after our founding principles,” she said. “They think that America is inherently evil because it was rooted in Christianity and capitalism and a Constitution, a rule of law where we get to elect our officials and they don’t like this.”
Parker, who founded the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, went on to forecast a win for the president if the ongoing civil unrest extends until November.
“I think they’re setting up Donald Trump for a landslide,” she said. “He may even get the only state that Ronald Reagan didn’t get after the last bout we had with these types of anti-American sentiments.”
“What next?”
Minnesota, which became the epicenter of the protests earlier this year, was the only state 1984 Democratic nominee Walter Mondale won in his ill-fated campaign against incumbent President Ronald Reagan.
“We’re talking about all of these organizations now, these peaceful protesters taking on the tactics of the KKK: threats, intimidation, what next?” Parker asked.
Some recent polls signal the tide is already turning against Biden. The two candidates are essentially tied in Florida, according to an NBC/Marist survey released this week.
As Trump maintains his “law-and-order” theme in response to the often destructive demonstrations, he and his campaign are attempting to associate the agitators and rioters with the Democratic Party. In one tweet including footage of protesters apparently harassing the staff of a fast-food restaurant, the president facetiously labeled them “Democrats and Sleepy Joe’s Peaceful Protestors!”
While Biden has offered some rhetorical disapproval of the violence and property damage on display on U.S. streets, only time will tell if it will be enough to convince voters that his administration would actually keep law-abiding citizens safe.
