Report: 12 dead after another weekend of shootings in Chicago

Chicago was the scene of more heartbreaking gun violence this weekend.

Over 50 people were shot, 12 fatally, from Friday to Monday morning in the city governed by Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Seven people were killed in the Windy City on Saturday alone.

Another deadly weekend

The killing started after midnight early Saturday, when a 34-year-old was found dead with a gunshot in the back of the head in West Englewood, according to the Sun-Times. Before sunrise, a 47-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man were killed at a 2 a.m. gathering in Austin after an argument turned violent, and a 34-year-old man was killed in River West about an hour later.

Saturday afternoon, a 32-year-old man was killed in West Englewood when a “male suspect in a dark-colored SUV pulled alongside him and fired shots,” the Sun-Times reported. A 43-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were also killed within moments of each other around 11 p.m., in separate shootings in East Side and Austin.

Roughly an hour later, a man was discovered dead in Woodlawn early Sunday with fatal shots to the torso.

The violence continues

Sunday afternoon, two gunmen shot a group of people on a porch in Englewood, killing a 35-year-old man and injuring a 17-year-old boy, a 60-year-old man, and a 26-year-old woman, according to the Sun-Times.

Sunday evening, an 86-year-old man was found dead after a “domestic dispute” in West Pullman, and an 85-year-old man was arrested, the Sun-Times reported. Approaching midnight, a 28-year-old woman was gunned down in Garfield Park, and a 26-year-old man was also critically wounded.

The carnage continued into early Monday, when a 27-year-old man was shot dead in Uptown after midnight.

Lightfoot passes the buck

The weekend was deadlier than Labor Day weekend, when eight people were killed, including an 8-year-old girl, and almost 50 others were wounded in gunfire across the city, according to the local WBTV News. Chicago has seen a spike in murders this year as many other cities register an increase in violent crime and homicides.

President Donald Trump, for his part, has often blasted the city’s leaders over the violence, likening Chicago to a third world country. But Mayor Lightfoot insists that the fault lies with President Trump and Republicans for failing to enact gun control.

“As long as we have this proliferation of illegal guns that’s pouring in from outside of our borders, we are going to continue to fight an uphill battle,” Lightfoot said last month, according to Newsweek. “There are things that the federal government is uniquely qualified to do, to partner with us to stop this scourge of gun violence. This president refuses to engage on those basic issues.”
