One Democratic leader has just revealed a strategy that Democrats might use to prevent President Donald Trump from being able to put another justice on the Supreme Court.
Fox News reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Sunday refused to say that she would not use impeachment to stop President Trump’s nominee from being confirmed.
The implication, of course, is that Democratic leadership would consider using impeachment as an option.
“Arrows in our quiver”
Pelosi’s comments came during an interview that she did with ABC News. Host George Stephanopoulos asked Pelosi whether she and the Democrats are considering an impeachment tactic.
“We have our options. We have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now, but the fact is we have a big challenge in our country,” Pelosi said. “This president has threatened to not even accept the results of the election. Our main goal would be to protect the integrity of the election as we protect the people from the coronavirus.”
Stephanopoulos, however, was not satisfied. So, he asked Pelosi again whether Democrats would consider impeachment tactics.
“We have a responsibility,” Pelosi said. “We take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. We have a responsibility to meet the needs of the American people.”
“When we weigh the equities of protecting our democracy, it requires us to use every arrow in our quiver,” Pelosi added.
Other arrows
Pelosi seemed to suggest that impeachment was an option, although it is not exactly clear what the charge would be this time around. It is also not clear what other “arrows” Pelosi was referring to, at least in regards to stopping President Trump’s nominee from being confirmed.
Other progressive Democrats seem to already be looking ahead to a Biden presidency and have already started talking about the possibility of court-packing. This is the idea of expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court, thereby giving the party in charge the power to swing the court in its favor.
We can’t predict the future. But, there are two things we can say with certainty.
First, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are going to try to put another justice on the Supreme Court. And second, the Democrats are going to do just about anything and everything they can to stop this from happening, which, apparently, even includes impeaching the president.
