Michigan native Michael Moore is worried about Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign in his home state.
Moore said during a Hill TV interview that campaign operatives in the state need to wake up after President Donald Trump cut the poll lead there in half since June, from 16 points to 8.
“The fact that Trump has narrowed the lead by 50 percent since June should have everybody screaming bloody murder,” Moore said. “We don’t have a minute to lose on this.”
Moore predicted that Trump would win in 2016 even though nearly all the experts thought that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would win easily.
Biden ground game “worse than Hillary’s”
Moore theorized that Biden’s ground game might be “worse than Hillary’s” — she famously didn’t visit the state in the lead-up to the 2016 election and lost there by 10,000 votes.
“It’s actually worse than Hillary,” Moore said. “At least there was a ground game, even though she didn’t show up. There were Hillary offices in many towns, there were door-to-door campaigns.”
He acknowledged that Biden is running an “invisible campaign” in Michigan, as described by Time magazine, but emphasized that it might not be enough.
“Yes, we need to do it differently than 2016, but we need to go the other direction,” Moore said. “We need more, we don’t need less.”
Will it matter?
It remains to be seen whether recent changes to the way mail-in votes are collected and counted could move the needle toward Biden in ways that the candidate himself has failed to do.
A judge ruled Thursday that Michigan election officials can count mail-in ballots that are received in the state for two weeks after Election Day as long as they are postmarked by November 2.
Ballot harvesting — allowing third parties to collect and turn in ballots on others’ behalf — is also being allowed for this election only, supposedly because of the coronavirus outbreak. The judge did not explain why it is considered safer to give your ballot to someone else than to go vote in-person or mail it in.
The last-minute changes are thought to give Democrats an advantage in winning the state and set up a situation where the winner of the state’s electoral votes might not be known for weeks after Election Day.
