Democratic presidential running mate Kamala Harris recently spoke to Jacob Blake, the Black man seen shot by police in a viral video that sparked the latest wave of nationwide protests.
When reports surfaced that the U.S. senator from California was “proud” of the accused sex offender, however, former Fox News Channel host Megyn Kelly was among those who expressed outrage, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
“A moving moment”
Blake, who was reportedly paralyzed from the shooting, was at the home of the woman he was accused of sexually assaulting at the time officers were called.
His family’s attorney issued a statement celebrating the phone conversation between Harris and the hospital-bound suspect.
“In a moving moment, Jacob Jr. told Sen. Harris that he was proud of her, and the senator told Jacob that she was also proud of him and how he is working through his pain,” wrote Ben Crump.
Kelly, known as an advocate for sexual-assault victims, blasted Harris for apparently ignoring the alleged victim in the case.
“PROUD of him?” she tweeted. “He’s accused of breaking into a sleeping woman’s house, sexually assaulting her, humiliating her & later returning to harass her. Then the cops she called for help say he resisted arrest, assaulted them & went for his knife. How about a word for his victim, Senator?”
Shocking details
Police were called to the scene when the woman reported Blake was at her home in violation of a restraining order.
While video shows an officer shoot Blake multiple times in the back, subsequent reports indicate he had been resisting arrest. As Kelly noted, officers reported finding a knife inside his vehicle.
Blake pleaded not guilty to criminal charges including trespassing, third-degree sexual assault, and disorderly conduct during a remote hearing from his hospital bed on Friday.
Harris, however, has apparently found “pride” in the alleged criminal. Last year, she notably stated that she believed the women who accused then-candidate Joe Biden of touching them inappropriately before going on to join his ticket.
While the senator and other Democrats might continue to seize on this case as part of an ongoing push for police reform, the apparent lack of interest in Blake’s alleged victim belies their #MeToo rhetoric.
