‘Let the investigations go’: Trump vows to fire DeJoy if evidence reveals campaign finance violation

Although he continues to defend his embattled postmaster general, President Donald Trump recently signaled that he would not hesitate to give Louis DeJoy the boot if he is found guilty of wrongdoing.

During a press conference on Monday, the president called DeJoy an “honest guy” but acknowledged that he would dismiss him if an ongoing probe turns up anything definitive, as reported by the Daily Caller.

“Within a short period of time”

Amid allegations of campaign finance violations at his former company, DeJoy is currently the subject of an investigation into questionable political donations.

“I don’t know much about it, I read something this morning,” the president said in response to a reporter’s question. “I don’t know exactly what the story is. I’ll know within a short period of time.”

He was responding to the claims included in articles from both The New York Times and Washington Post that DeJoy not only pressured some of his employees at New Breed Logistics to make contributions to Republican candidates but then reimbursed them.

The tactic, known as making straw donations, is commonly used to bypass campaign donation limits.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called the allegations “very serious” and demanded an investigation. For his part, Trump supported the effort to uncover the truth while continuing to express confidence in DeJoy.

“They found nothing”

“Let the investigations go,” Trump said. “We’ll see how that goes. I think he’s a very honest guy.”

Pressed on whether he would commit to removing DeJoy should an investigation uncover misconduct, the president offered a clear message.

“Yes, if something can be proven, always,” he said. “They have been looking at me for four years. They found nothing. Four years.”

Of course, DeJoy has faced unrelated controversy during his short tenure at the helm of the U.S. Postal Service, including attacks from Democrats over cuts that they believed were intended to compromise the reliability of mail-in ballots ahead of the presidential election.

Whether there is anything to the latest allegations against DeJoy remains to be seen. Trump’s call for due process and accountability where necessary, however, is the latest evidence of his administration’s adherence to a law-and-order agenda.
