A stenographer who worked with Joe Biden in the White House confirmed that the former vice president has “lost a step.”
Commenting on the health of the Democratic presidential hopeful in an interview with the Washington Free Beacon that was published Tuesday, Mike McCormick said Biden “doesn’t seem to have the same mental acuity as he did four years ago.”
“He doesn’t have the energy, he doesn’t have the pace of his speaking,” McCormick, who, according to the Free Beacon, “worked as a White House stenographer for 15 years and with Biden from 2011 to 2017,” said.
“It is a complete difference from what he was in 2017,” McCormick told the Free Beacon. “He’s a different guy.”
“It’s not Joe Biden anymore”
Speaking with the Fre Beacon, McCormick recalled that Biden would “just make a big joke out of it” when he would make a mistake in the past. But no longer.
“He’d just make a big joke out of it, and go straight from the hip. And notice, he’s not doing that anymore,” McCormick reportedly said. “He read that [Democratic National Committee speech] verbatim.”
The former White House stenographer added: “It’s not Joe Biden anymore.”
“A white guy named Edison”
Many observers have indeed pointed to the regular gaffes and verbal missteps from the former vice president as signs of a possible health problem. Some have even suggested that Biden’s habit of campaigning from the basement of his Delaware home is an attempt to hide his apparent cognitive decline.
At various points over the past year, Biden has mixed up his wife and his sister, forgotten what state he is in, and told voters that he is running for a seat in the United States Senate. More recently, Fox News reported that the Democratic presidential nominee said: “A Black man invented the light bulb, not a white guy named Edison.”
Biden was apparently referring to African American inventor Lewis Howard Latimer. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Latimer actually developed an improved version of the light bulb.
“Body-slammed by Putin”
McCormick, for his part, didn’t just address Biden’s cognitive difficulties on Tuesday; he also brought up an incident in which the former vice president was “humiliated” by Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In his new book, Joe Biden Unauthorized, McCormick alleges that in 2011, Putin had Biden’s microphone cut off during a visit by the VP to Russia and ordered press out the room.
“He basically got body-slammed by Putin, really. I mean, I don’t know how else to describe it,” McCormick told the Free Beacon of Biden. “To me it was like, here’s our great foreign policy expert and he just got punk’d. And Vladimir Putin just had no fear or respect for him.”
