DeSantis says Trump ‘has the advantage’ over Biden in Florida

As Joe Biden races to offset faltering poll numbers in Florida, the state’s Republican governor just delivered to the former vice president some awful news about his prospects.

Republican Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that Biden is failing to “make the sale” in the Sunshine State, which may explain why his lead has shrunk, Fox News reported.

DeSantis: Biden is falling flat

Gov. DeSantis told Fox’s Bill Hemmer Reports that President Donald Trump is doing better in the state than he was four years ago, when he narrowly won the key battleground.

DeSantis added that Trump even seems to be gaining ground in the historically Democratic Miami-Dade county.

“I think now, the difference between now and [20]16, you look at a place like Miami-Dade County, the president didn’t perform well there and he still won the state. He is performing much better there,” the governor said, according to Fox.

Florida has many older voters, a group that some say Biden has been making inroads with, as a report from Forbes noted. But Trump has managed to narrow the race significantly in recent polls, and Biden is also said to be struggling to win over Florida’s large Hispanic population.

“I think [Trump] has united the Republican base for sure. He’s winning a lot of these independents, particularly in the Hispanic community — that is really significant,” DeSantis told Fox.

Making the sale?

Trump is indeed outperforming Biden with Florida’s Hispanic voters, according to a recent poll from NBC/Marist, which found that Trump is leading Biden in the demographic by four points, while they are tied with older voters and voters overall.

“Not only am I surprised. I’m shocked. I’m aghast. It’s perplexing,” Florida pollster and Democratic strategist Fernand Amandi told Yahoo News of Biden’s struggle to rally Hispanic voters. “There were plenty of times and plenty of opportunities to have addressed the situation earlier rather than trying to salvage it at the 11th down.”

Biden indeed looked desperate at a campaign stop in Florida this week, where he was criticized for pandering by dancing to the popular song “Despacito.”

“I think that Biden has not been able to make the sale on a lot of voters that a Democrat would need to win,” DeSantis told Fox on  Wednesday.

“I think it’s always competitive in Florida and this will be no different,” he added. “But I think the president has the advantage.”
