Can money buy presidential elections? I don’t know, but one billionaire is going to give it try.
Breitbart reports that Mike Bloomberg, the man who recently failed as a Democrat presidential candidate, has announced that he is going to spend a minimum of $100 million in Florida in order to try to ensure that the state votes blue this November.
It’s true
The plan was revealed by Bloomberg’s economic adviser, Howard Wolfson, and reported on by the Washington Post.
Bloomberg, according to Wolfson, is looking to encourage early voting in Florida in the hope of giving a “lie to what we expect to be Trump’s election night messaging that Democrats are stealing the election, because unlike other battleground states, Florida counts its absentee ballots on or by Election Day.”
According to Kevin Sheekey, another political advisor of Bloomberg, this plan will have another benefit, namely, allowing other Democratic funds to be used elsewhere.
“Mike believes that by investing in Florida it will allow [Biden’s] campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania,” he said.
This plan goes hand-in-hand with something else we have been hearing from Bloomberg, that President Donald Trump is going to appear to win on election day, only to lose some time later when the mail-in and absentee ballots are counted.
This is the scenario that was recently pushed by the analytic firm Hawkfish, which also is funded by Bloomberg. The firm refers to it as the “red mirage.”
Looking ahead
Florida is a swing state. There is no doubt that its 29 votes will give the candidate who wins the state a big push towards victory.
According to the RealClearPolitics poll aggregator, it is pretty much a dead heat between Trump and Biden in Florida, with maybe a slight lead for Trump in some of the polls.
We know that Bloomberg loves to throw money at his political problems. He went $600 million deep on his presidential campaign before he called it quits. We’ll have to see how this new plan works out for him.
Voting in Florida will start on September 24th.
