Barr won’t rule out more charges from Durham: ‘There could be’

Attorney General Bill Barr announced Wednesday that “there could be” more charges coming from U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the infamous Trump–Russia collusion probe, the Washington Examiner reported.

Former FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith was the first to be publicly charged in Durham’s probe, which began in May 2017 and became a criminal investigation in October of that year. Clinesmith pleaded guilty in August to making false statements related to 2016 Trump campaign aide Carter Page, according to Fox News.

“There could be”

Speaking Wednesday, Barr told NBC News’ Pete Williams that Clinesmith may not be the last to face accountability thanks to Durham’s work.

It was Williams who first pressed the issue, asking Barr if “it’s unlikely there’ll be further criminal charges” from Durham, according to a transcript shared by CBS News’ Catherine Herridge and cited by the Examiner.

“No, I wouldn’t say that at all, no,” Barr reportedly replied. “There could be.”

The attorney general refused to say whether Durham would wrap up his probe and issue a report prior to November’s election, insisting that he was “not going to get into that.”

Just the beginning?

The question of whether Durham will indeed issue more indictments has been hotly debated since Clinesmith first entered his guilty plea. Conservative commentator and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andy McCarthy said then that the public should expect more indictments to follow.

“You don’t win the game in the first inning,” McCarthy explained to Fox News personality Bill Hemmer in August.

McCarthy said he believed Clinesmith’s conviction was merely the “beginning.”

“I think that it’s important [that] you have somebody who made a false statement, who’s pleaded guilty,” the former federal prosecutor said, according to Fox. “I think the crime is more serious than the defendant articulated it to be, but I think it’s good that Durham prosecuted it, and I think this is more like the beginning than the end.”

Donald Trump and his supporters — and anyone who believes the president was treated unfairly during an investigation that turned up no evidence of collusion — certainly hope McCarthy’s prediction proves correct.
