With plans for the Republican Convention seeming to change on a daily basis, President Donald Trump is considering the White House as a location from which he may accept the party’s nomination at the end of the month.
“It’s easy, and I think it’s a beautiful setting and we are thinking about that. It’s certainly one of the alternatives,” Trump said on Fox&Friends Wednesday.
Trump also pointed out that it would save taxpayer dollars if he did the speech at the White House, where he would already be located prior to the speech.
The Republican convention had been set to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida; but the Florida part of the convention was canceled by Trump last week because of coronavirus concerns.
Pelosi blasts Trump’s plan
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) blasted Trump for his plan to give the acceptance speech at the White House, saying that it would “degrade” the White House and that Trump was just trying to distract people from his coronavirus response.
“States are suffering from the virus — and we’re talking about whether he can have a political event at the White House,” Pelosi said. “He can’t. But again, it’s a diversion, and he’s a master of diversion.”
Previous presidents have avoided using the White House for political activities, but they are excluded from the Hatch Act that prevents most politicians from conducting political activities in their official capacity.
So techinically, Trump can do the speech from the White House if he wants to, it just hasn’t been done before.
Biden won’t travel to Milwaukee to accept nomination
Similarly to Trump, presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden will not travel to the site of the Democrat Convention to accept his party’s nomination either. Instead, Biden will accept the nomination from Delaware.
Unlike Trump, however, Biden is expected not to attend any part of the convention in person, whereas Trump will travel to North Carolina for part of the convention business, The Hill reported.
Trump’s recent decisions to cancel live campaign events have made it easier for Democrats to keep Biden hidden away from voters in order to try to hide his mental decline, which some sources have apparently said is “rapidly worsening.”
As time goes on and particularly if the coronavirus outbreak lessens, however, it will become more and more apparent that Biden is not fit to be president and he will have to be replaced or see more voters unwilling to put the country in his increasingly feeble hands.
