President Donald Trump is racking up the police vote — even in Democratic cities like New York City.
The New York City Police Benevolent Association, which represents some 24,000 police officers, announced on Friday its endorsement of Trump for president — a clear snub to Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
Keep ’em coming
Trump and the police association celebrated the endorsement at an event held at the president’s Bedminster, New Jersey, club, Breitbart reported. Things got underway with association president Patrick Lynch making a speech in which he thanked President Trump for supporting police officers at a time when so few — especially so few in politics — are doing so.
“I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the president of the United States until now,” Lynch said. “That’s how important this is. Mr. President, we’re fighting for our lives out there, we don’t want this to spread to the country, we need your strong voice across the country.”
Trump speaks
Following Lynch’s speech, President Trump stepped up to the podium. The event quickly turned into something of a campaign rally, with Trump targeting the left and its leaders, while the crowd cheered him on.
“As we gather today, our country is suffering from a radical far-left movement,” Trump said, adding that Democrats want to “defame, demoralize, defund, dismantle, and dissolve our great police departments.”
The president went on to cite some examples of the sort of negative treatment that law enforcement has received in recent months, referring to it as “a left-wing war on cops.”
President Trump placed the blame on Democratic leaders, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who Trump said failed to support police officers when they most needed it. The president added that electing Biden to the presidency would lead to more of the same.
“Joe Biden’s national police strategy will be modeled on the Bill de Blasio catastrophe,” Trump said.
“Sign of a leader”
After President Trump’s speech, Lynch expressed his gratitude, saying, “The sign of a leader is someone who will stand at a podium like this and speak the truth and will say what needs to be said and will not be afraid to do it.”
Say what you will about President Trump, but you can’t deny that.
Democrats in the city, which has seen a surge in violent crime in recent weeks, were not happy with the union’s endorsement of Trump, Fox News reported. Leftist House candidate Jamaal Bowman alleged this shows that the NYPD is “not interested in working with the people of our city,” while far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) questioned whether police unions should be allowed to make political endorsements at all.
