Ever since Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) was selected to be Joe Biden’s running mate, she has come under critical fire for some of her past positions, including an apparent stance in opposition to the Catholic Church and Catholicism in general.
None other than former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich recently slammed Harris for being the “most openly anti-Catholic bigot” on a presidential ticket in the modern era, Breitbart reported.
Gingrich blasts Harris
Former Speaker Gingrich, whose wife Callista Gingrich is the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican in Rome, published an essay on his own website on Friday that exposed just some examples of Sen. Harris’ apparent bigotry toward those who practice the Catholic faith.
He noted that Harris’ anti-Catholic bigotry has been displayed through her opposition to devout Catholic judicial nominees, her willingness to prosecute the Little Sisters of the Poor, her decision to side with a labor union against Catholic hospitals and, of course, her strong stance in favor of restriction-free and taxpayer-funded abortions.
Gingrich summed up the vice presidential candidate’s anti-Catholic bigotry as the “perfect example of the modern radical left’s ideology of ‘intolerant tolerance.'”
History of bigotry
Chief among the examples cited by Gingrich was the manner in which Harris grilled U.S. District Court Judge Brian Buescher during his confirmation hearings in late 2018, in which she seemed to strongly imply that Buescher’s devout Catholic faith rendered him incapable and unfit to serve as a federal judge.
As the Associated Press reported at the time, the heart of Harris’ attack on Buescher was his membership in the charitable Knights of Columbus organization and its obvious stance in opposition to abortion and gay marriage, which is the same stance maintained by the Catholic Church.
Aside from that, Harris has also been adamant in her belief that the charitable Little Sisters of the Poor should be required to provide health insurance to employees that covers the cost of contraceptives and abortions — two things the nuns oppose on religious grounds and which they have twice had to fight in the Supreme Court to avoid.
Another example cited by Gingrich was during Harris’ tenure as attorney general of California when she sided with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in a hostile bid to take over and unionize a conglomerate that was attempting to purchase six financially struggling nonprofit Catholic Daughters of Charity-run hospitals that had already been pushed to insolvency by union contracts.
That planned rescue of the six failing hospitals was ultimately nixed — and the hospitals finally put out of business — after Harris insisted on imposing stringent pro-union requirements on the proposed buyout.
Shameful reflection on Biden
Gingrich ended his piece by noting that Harris’ apparent anti-Catholic bigotry reflects on Biden and his own professed Catholic faith and begs the question of whether he has set his faith to the side in submission to the “atheist and anti-religious left” that has gained great stature in the Democratic Party.
Given the voluminous recent examples in which he has acquiesced to such forces, the answer appears to be an affirmative one.
