President Donald Trump just locked down a big win that will likely leave Joe Biden shaking in his boots.
According to Breitbart, the New York City Police Benevolent Association (NYC PBA) has become the latest police union to endorse President Trump in his re-election bid. The group is made up of roughly 24,000 officers with the New York City Police Department, making it the “largest municipal police union in the world,” according to its website.
“I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the president of the United States until now. That’s how important this is,” NYC PBA president Patrick Lynch said Friday, according to Breitbart. “Mr. President, we’re fighting for our lives out there… We need your strong voice across the country.”
The news comes just weeks after the National Association of Police Organizations — which, according to The Hill, “serves as an umbrella organization for Police Benevolent Association chapters” — abandoned Biden to similarly endorse Trump. The group had backed the Obama–Biden ticket in 2008 and 2012, The Hill noted.
Trump wins big
President Trump accepted the NYC PBA’s endorsement at an event that was held at his Bedminster, New Jersey club on Friday, Breitbart reported.
Following remarks from Lynch, Trump took the podium to denounce the “radical far-left movement” and its attacks on law enforcement. According to Breitbart, the president said that this group wants to “defame, demoralize, defund, dismantle, and dissolve our great police departments.”
Referencing New York City’s Democrat mayor, Trump went on to argue that “Joe Biden’s national police strategy will be modeled on the Bill de Blasio catastrophe.” De Blasio has faced criticism for failing to support New York’s Finest when they came under attack by protesters aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement earlier this summer.
After Trump’s speech, Lynch thanked the president for speaking “the truth” and saying “what needs be said.”
Democrats react
Of course, it’s hardly a surprise that President Trump is being endorsed by police unions across the country. He and others in his administration have stood behind law enforcement over the last several months when it seemed few other politicians were willing to do so.
Friday’s endorsement still seemed to take Democrats by surprise, however. According to Fox News, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) issued a message late Friday questioning whether police unions ought to even be allowed to give a political endorsement.
Meanwhile, Democrat House hopeful Jamaal Bowman, who has enjoyed Ocasio-Cortez’s support in his own bid for Congress, argued in a tweet that the NYC PBA’s show of support for Trump indicates “clearly” that city police “are not interested in working with the people of our city” and “explains their continued aggression against innocent people,” as Fox reported.
More likely, however, is a far less nefarious reason for the NYC PBA’s endorsement of Trump: the Democratic Party abandoned the police, and now, the police are abandoning them.
