California Rep. Maxine Waters (D) announced over the weekend that she thinks President Donald Trump should be removed from office — and she’s not willing to wait until November to see if American voters agree.
According to Breitbart, Waters told MSNBC on Saturday that it’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment to force Trump out of office.
Waters accused the president of “undermining our democracy and “tearing up our post office” before saying she believes it’s time “for Section 4 of Amendment 25 to be put in place.”
“This man should be removed from office,” she said of Trump, according to Breitbart. “He is dangerous.”
“No shame”
As Waters alluded, Section 4 of the 25th Amendment allows for the removal of the president in the event that he “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” Intended to be used in cases where the president has become mentally incapacitated, the measure has never been invoked.
But that won’t stop Waters from trying.
The congresswoman’s incendiary remarks came after President Trump launched a new line of attack last week against Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden’s running mate, current California Sen. Kamala Harris (D). According to The New York Times, Trump suggested Thursday that Harris “doesn’t meet the requirements” to serve in one of the nation’s highest offices because her parents were not born in the United States.
This apparently left Waters, also a California lawmaker, outraged. “The president of the United States of America is unbelievably divisive. The president lies. He’s pitting people against each other, going back to the old birther argument that they attempted to use against [Barack] Obama,” Waters told MSNBC on Saturday, according to Breitbart.
Waters then revived an old mantra of failed White House hopeful Hillary Clinton. “This is a president that is the most deplorable human being that I have ever encountered in my life,” the congresswoman said of Trump, according to Breitbart. “This man has no shame. The name-calling, he called her nasty, on and on and on. I don’t know how much more the American people can take.”
“Go directly to the courts”
With this in mind, Waters said it’s time to give Trump the boot — and it seems even a hearing on the matter wouldn’t be enough to satisfy her.
“I’m not even supportive of just having a hearing,” she said, according to Breitbart. “I want to have an injunction against the president based on all the actions that he has taken that is so obvious that it is political, that he is trying to destroy the post office because he believes that mail-in voting, absentee voting will defeat him and he will do anything.” Waters went on:
So I think we need to get right to the court with an injunction. I will be talking with the speaker about that today. […] I think that we need to go directly to the courts and try to get an injunction against any more movements by him.
Only time will tell if such a move from Democrats would be successful, but given their history of failing to oust Trump, it certainly doesn’t look too promising. If Dems like Waters want a new president in the White House, they’ll have to go about it the old-fashioned way: by convincing voters to choose them on Nov. 3. Unfortunately for them, with “Joe 30330” on the ticket, that certainly won’t be an easy feat.
