Conservative writer Andrew Sullivan announces resignation from New York magazine

New York magazine lost one of its most prominent writers this week.

According to Fox News, Andrew Sullivan tendered his resignation, citing reasons he said should be “pretty self-evident.”

He addressed the situation on Twitter with a post on Tuesday announcing it would be his last week with the magazine.

“I am immensely grateful”

“I’m sad because the editors I worked with there are among the finest in the country, and I am immensely grateful to them for vastly improving my work,” he tweeted.

As for the specific cause of his decision, Sullivan did not reveal specifics. Instead, he used the tweet to recognize the talents of his colleagues and promise to discuss “the broader questions involved” in his decision as part of a final column set to be published on Friday.

“I have no beef with my colleagues, many of whom I admire and are friends,” he tweeted. His news came on the heels of a similarly abrupt departure from The New York Times by columnist Bari Weiss.

She detailed her reasons for leaving in a blistering letter, asserting that she had been the “subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree” with her views.

Sullivan subsequently expressed support for Weiss on Twitter.

“Her editors stood by and watched”

“The mob bullied and harassed a young woman for thoughtcrimes,” he wrote. “And her editors stood by and watched. I’d say Bari’s future is a lot more promising than the NYT’s.”

As for New York, its editor in chief recently sent an email to staff in which he asserted that Sullivan’s “editorial project and the magazine’s, though overlapping in many ways, were no longer the right match for each other,” going on to explain his philosophy regarding partisan disagreements.

“I am trying hard to create in this magazine a civil, respectful, intellectually honest space for political debate,” David Haskell wrote. “I believe there is a way to write from a conservative perspective about some of the most politically charged subjects of American life while still upholding our values.”

Given the rate that conservative columnists appear to be fleeing left-leaning institutions, it seems clear that many believe there is a not-so-secret effort to silence dissenters within their ranks.
