Trump says he’s ‘still here’ after completing hydroxychloroquine regimen

President Donald Trump announced this weekend that he has completed his cycle of hydroxychloroquine and that the experience was a positive one.

“Finished, just finished,” Trump was quoted by the Washington Examiner as telling Sharyl Attkisson, host of the Sunday-morning television program “Full Measure With Sharyl Attkisson.”  “And by the way, I’m still here,” the president added jokingly. “To the best of my knowledge, here I am.”

Trump: “I believe in it”

Trump stirred controversy earlier in the month when he revealed that he had been taking the anti-malarial drug as a precautionary measure during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I believe in it enough that I took a program because I had two people in the White House that tested positive,” Trump explained to Attkisson. “But hydroxy has had tremendous, if you look at it, tremendous, rave reviews.”

“A lot of good things have come out,” the president announced to reporters at a White House round table event on May 18, adding that he had been taking the medication for “a couple of weeks.”

And you’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the front-line workers, before you catch it. The front-line workers — many, many are taking it. I happen to be taking it,” he continued.

White House staffers test positive

Among the White House staff found to be infected with the coronavirus earlier in May was Katie Miller, who serves as press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence and is married to senior White House adviser Stephen Miller.

Miller announced this week that she has recovered and is back to work — and also shared news of her pregnancy. “Back at work today after three NEGATIVE COVID tests. Thank you to all my amazing doctors and everyone who reached out with support. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing husband who took great care of his pregnant wife. #TransitionToGreatness,” she tweeted Tuesday.

One day before, The Hill reported that a military official who serves as one of the president’s drivers also tested positive for the disease.

Dr. Nesheiwat: Trump “very smart” for taking hydroxychloroquine

While many were critical of Trump’s use of hydroxychloroquine, others were more supportive. Among the latter is Fox News contributor and New York-area physician Janette Nesheiwat.

During an interview with Fox host Neil Cavuto, Nesheiwat praised the president’s decision as a “very smart” move and said that she has herself prescribed hydroxychloroquine to patients suffering from COVID-19.

“You have to have a discussion with your doctor to decide if it is best for you,” she said. “It is not going to be good for everyone but it may be beneficial and potentially life-saving for others.”
