Bernie Sanders took second place in South Carolina on Saturday night, losing to former Vice President Joe Biden by almost 20 points.
In his concession speech, Sanders’ admitted defeat in the Palmetto state but sounded upbeat about his prospects for Super Tuesday.
On to the next
“We have won the popular vote in Iowa. We have won the New Hampshire primary, we have won the Nevada caucus, but you cannot win them all,” Sanders admitted.
“I want to congratulate Joe Biden on his victory tonight, and now we enter Super Tuesday and Virginia,” the self-described socialist continued.
“And I believe very strongly that the people of this country on Super Tuesday and after, are going to support our campaign because we are more than a campaign, we are a movement,” he declared.
Sanders next argued that Democrats’ hope for victory depends on a huge upsurge in new voters showing up in November.
“In order to defeat Trump we are going to need the largest voter turnout in the history of this country,” the 78-year-old predicted.
“What we are going to have to do is speak to millions of working-class people who are today, working two or three jobs. They’re worried about their kids. They’re worried about retirement. They can’t afford health care.”
Bernie cements his platform
He next trained his sights on the banking and pharmaceutical industries, claiming, that “it turns out the folks on Wall Street are getting worried as well. And the drug companies, man, they are really worried because we are catching onto the reality that they are ripping off the American people in an unseemly way.”
Sanders then launched into a laundry list of policy priorities, including bringing an “end to the so-called war on drugs.”
“Turns out, who knew this, but it turns out, through executive order a president can legalize marijuana in every state in this country,” he claimed.
The second-place finisher went on to promise a “first-class” rail network, reform of the “racist” criminal justice system, and new gun restrictions as part of an effort to “transform this country.”
