Are members of the so-called “Resistance” infiltrating President Donald Trump’s White House? One Fox News host thinks so.
According to Fox’s Tucker Carlson, recent comments from acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney make it seem like he is working to “undermine his boss’s agenda.”
“That shouldn’t surprise you,” Carlson added on Friday’s episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight, according to the Washington Examiner. “Mulvaney despises Donald Trump.”
Desperate, desperate
The Fox host’s comments came after a New York Times article alleged this week that Mulvaney made some contentious comments about the president on a recent trip to the U.K.
“I disagree with the president every single day, you just don’t hear about it — that’s not my job,” Mulvaney reportedly said. “The president looks for people who disagree with him and disagree with each other.”
Mulvaney added that it’s the job of White House staffers “to agree with the president all the time publicly” and to “disagree with him privately,” according to the Times, which obtained audio of the conversation.
The chief of staff also stirred up controversy by asserting in the same talk that the U.S. is “desperate” for more legal immigrants.
“We are desperate, desperate, for more people,” he said, according to the Examiner. “We are running out of people to fuel the economic growth that we’ve had in our nation over the last four years. We need more immigrants.”
Time to go?
It was these remarks from Mulvaney that had Carlson up in arms Friday evening.
“Everything about that statement is dishonest and stupid. For one thing, Americans don’t want more immigration,” the Fox host argued, according to The Hill. He went on to cite a 2018 Harvard/Harris poll that “found that 81% of American voters support curbing immigration levels.”
The Fox News host continued:
In a democracy, public opinion should matter. But even more basically, America isn’t running out of people. Far from it. Ask anyone who tries to drive to work in one of our major cities. In many ways, America is a crowded country, and that is bad. That’s why rent is so high, for example.
Carlson finished by asking the question left on everyone’s minds after the Times report went public: “So why is Mick Mulvaney, who passionately disagrees with Donald Trump, running Donald Trump’s White House?” he demanded.
Indeed, perhaps it is time for Mulvaney to go.
