Disgraced former Hollywood producer and Democratic Party financier Harvey Weinstein can now add “felon” to his list of introductory titles after he was convicted in a New York court earlier this week of rape in the third degree and a criminal sexual act in the first degree. But although Weinstein was a well-known contributor to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, the former secretary of State doesn’t seem to think she has anything to apologize for in that regard.
According to Breitbart, Clinton responded to questions about Weinstein and his campaign contributions Tuesday by deflecting from the issue and bringing up the former film mogul’s connections to other top Dems, like Barack Obama and Al Gore.
“The jury’s verdict [in the Weinstein case] really speaks for itself,” she was caught saying at a recent screening of Hillary, a biopic on herself.
A chilling effect?
The film was shown at a Berlin film festival earlier this week, where, according to Deadline, Clinton was met with questions about whether there should be increased scrutiny over the “sources of [campaign] donations in the future,” particularly in light of Weinstein’s conviction.
In response, the former secretary of State tried to wriggle her way out of her relationship with Weinstein by pointing to his contributors to the campaigns of Democrats like Obama, Gore, and John Kerry.
Notably, she failed to name her husband as a beneficiary of Weinstein’s fortune.
“I don’t know if that should chill anyone else from contributing to political campaigns, but it should end the kind of behavior that he was convicted for,” Clinton said of Weinstein and his troubles.
A look ahead
Unsurprisingly, Clinton was also asked Tuesday about the current presidential race — one she has repeatedly been rumored to be on the edge of joining. She responded by saying her goal is to “retire” President Donald Trump, but she declined to say who she is supporting in the primaries.
“I’m going to wait and see who we nominate,” Clinton said, according to The Hill. “I will support the nominee, and it won’t surprise you to hear me say that I think it’s imperative that we retire the incumbent.”
She also issued praise during her talk to the director of the Hillary documentary, saying that she’s “really amazed at how they took all this material and turned it into a compelling film.”
“It’s not just about my life, it’s about the arc of women’s lives, about our politics, about all the challenges that any person faces in a lifetime,” she added, according to Breitbart. “I am grateful that I have had the life that I have had.”
Grateful as she is, Clinton — and anyone else who accepted Weinstein’s money — should feel ashamed of themselves for even being loosely associated with the now-known predator. It’s unthinkable that she would do anything other than denounce Weinstein — but as usual, she’s just trying to sweep it all under the rug.
