It has been a humiliating week for Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the lead manager for the House’s impeachment case.
As the past week progressed, it became more and more obvious that Schiff and his team weren’t convincing anyone with the impeachment case that they were presenting before the Senate. That, in itself, is already bad enough news for Schiff, someone who has spent the past three years chasing impeachment, but things got worse for Schiff when President Donald Trump decided to rub it in.
Schiff destroyed
President Trump went after Schiff during a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday.
“He’s a sick puppy, but you know what?” Trump began. “Today I hit my highest poll numbers since I got elected.”
From there, the president went on to mock Schiff for the difficulties he must be experiencing during the Senate trial.
“He lies awake at night shifting and turning, shifty, shifting and turning in his bed, sweating like a dog,” Trump joked. “‘How am I going to get him, he didn’t do anything wrong, how am I going to get him?'” Trump continued, imitating Schiff’s voice.
“What a sick guy he is,” the president concluded.
The farce
In addition to these musings on Schiff, Trump took time during the rally to rail against the impeachment sham, which he referred to as “impeachment light.”
“That’s not going to work,” Trump said. “Watch. Just watch. Why am I not worried? I should be worried.”
President Trump went on to point out for the crowd the major difference between the current impeachment trial and the previous two impeachment trials of Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. The president noted how those two efforts were considered a “dark period” for the country, but “for us,” he said, “this is a happy period.”
The reason for this, the president explained, is all of the success that he and his administration are having while the Democrats waste their time on impeachment. “While we’re proudly creating jobs and killing terrorists, congressional Democrats are consumed with partisan rage and obsessed with a deranged witch hunt hoax,” the president said.
Indeed, it’s hard to argue with that, and November 2020 is going to prove it.
