Kellyanne Conway: ‘I’ll show up’ if Schiff testifies in impeachment hearing

Since joining his campaign in 2016, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway has served as a trusted adviser to Donald Trump. During a press briefing on Monday, Conway promised to do something else for the president he continues to face the prospect of impeachment.

“Is Adam Schiff going to testify? Because he is a fact witness. That would be great. I’ll tell you what, if Adam Schiff testifies, I’ll show up on behalf of the White House,” she said.

Conway was referring to a statement made by Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) in which the congressman said he wanted to call Schiff to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. “My first and foremost witness is Adam Schiff,” Collins told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace.

What’s more, Conway had some harsh words for both the impeachment proceedings and the Democrats running it.

“Independents falling away”

“Our White House counsel has made very clear dating back to October 8 that this is an unconstitutional and illegitimate process, and we stand by that. We haven’t seen anything to change that,” she declared.

Conway added, “We’ve seen independents falling away from the Democratic point of view on impeaching the president. We’ve seen these 31 Democrats from Trump-Pence districts getting earfuls when they go home from a lot of people asking, “‘Why aren’t you working for us?'”

She is certaninly correct in asserting that independents are turning on impeachment. Last month’s Emerson poll showed that numbers on the issue had essentially flipped, with more voters now opposing the move than supporting it, and the all-important independent voters showing the biggest shift away from impeachment.

Dire consequences for 2020

Conway also predicted that the entire impeachment circus will bring about dire consequences for House Democrats come next November.

“And 21 of them are freshman,” Conway continued, “it is very tough to get re-elected after your freshman year, particularly when you’re in a district like that and you have the president at the top of the ticket.”

“So, they have to be more definitive about what they are doing. And they are not definitive. First, it is in the Judiciary Committee, then it is in the Intelligence Committee, now it is back to Judiciary,” she argued.

However, it appears that Democrats are unlikely to heed Conway’s warnings. Some House freshman were on record promising to impeach Trump even before they were sworn into office.

Among them is Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who boasted on election night that she would “impeach the motherf—–,” and who is now selling merchandise bearing that very slogan.
