Donald Trump and New York go hand-in-hand; the president was born and raised there. But now, Trump is getting ready to leave the Big Apple behind.
According to a report from The New York Times, President Trump has changed his primary residence from New York to Florida; that is, from Trump Tower to his Mar-a-Lago resort.
“I hereby declare that my above-described residence and abode in the State of Florida constitutes my predominant and principal home, and I intend to continue it permanently as such,” the declaration of domicile signed by Trump reads, according to the New York Post. “I formerly resided at 721 Fifth Avenue.”
Trump bids farewell to NYC
President Trump took to Twitter on Thursday night to explain his decision, according to the Post.
“I cherish New York, and the people of New York, and always will,” he wrote. “But unfortunately, despite the fact that I pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state.”
Indeed, New York lawyers and politicians have taken the lead on trying to get Trump’s tax returns in recent years. In fact, one of the city’s top lawyers, Jim Johnson, just announced his plan to go after Trump, the Post reports.
“The city and nation are facing a president that’s just tough on the most vulnerable and one of the things the department has been doing and I would like to advance is focusing on affirmative litigation,” Johnson said.
Trump has also been at odds with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who — despite everything that Trump has done for the state and its biggest city over the years — wished the president “good riddance,” according to NBC News. “He’s all yours, Florida,” Cuomo said.
“A special place in my heart”
Even with the hard feelings between Trump and New York leaders, the president said that the decision to change his permanent residence was a difficult one.
“I hated having to make this decision,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “But in the end it will be best for all concerned.”
Trump added that he “will always be there to help New York and the great people of New York.”
“It will always have a special place in my heart!” Trump said.
