From the beginning, most Republicans slammed the Mueller investigation as a farce. It didn’t take long to discover that the whole investigation was predicated on false information about President Donald Trump. Once the Steele dossier was discredited, however, Special Counsel Robert Mueller continued to mount a far-reaching investigatigation into Trump anyway.
In a recent op-ed, Jay Ambrose says that he now sees the writing on the wall when it comes to the ultimate trajectory of the probe being led by U.S. Attorney John Durham and believes that many people in official D.C. have real cause for concern.
In hindsight, it seems obvious that something was seriously wrong with what Mueller was doing, and the investigation of the investigation is now a criminal probe, a designation that affords the government new and expansive powers to subpoena witnesses and compel testimony.
As the mainstream media establishment screams about the current probe being nothing more than a manifestation of “revenge” on the part of Trump, Ambrose waits for the press to explain “what the evidence was in any particular case and who was being accused of what,” knowing that without such details — including proof of Russian collusion that does not rely on the infamous dossier — their claims of revenge are essentially baseless attempts to deflect from the real scandal.
Questionable origins
Durham would not even be investigating right now if Mueller had found one shred of collusion between Trump and Russia, as Ambrose reminds readers. However, the fact that Mueller’s $40 million investigation came up empty necessarily raises questions about how the whole thing got started in the first place.
Without any evidence of collusion after more than two years of relentless digging, it is important to ask the question of what, exactly, initially led anyone to suspect that Trump had colluded with Russia. Rumors and innuendo predicated on lies, seem to be the answer.
What Durham and Attorney General William Barr are now investigating is whether James Comey, Mueller or anyone involved at the inception of the probe broke the law in getting the whole process underway. Whether Comey knew the dossier was false when he went sought FISA warrants to conduct surveillance on the Trump campaign is an area of particular interest.
Did Mueller extend his investigation in bad faith in order to give Democrats cover for the 2018 midterm elections, allowing them to take back the House and set the stage for an equally farcical Trump impeachment? Ambrose is confident that Barr and Durham will be able to get to the bottom of these questions and figure out how and why over two years and $40 million were allowed to be wasted on this nonsense.
Preventing another soft coup
If Durham and Barr discover that Deep State actors and Democrats attempted to mount a soft coup against Trump, there ought to be hell to pay. Letting government officials, whether elected or appointed, believe that these tactics are acceptable means to seize power would be a disastrous outcome for the future of our government.
It is essential that the public knows what Comey, Mueller and other Deep Staters tried to do to Trump so that we can hold our government accountable and make certain it never happens again.
The desperation with which Democrats are trying to distract the public from this investigation speaks to its importance. It would help to explain House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)’s sudden reversal on impeachment after months of holding out against the extreme wing of her party.
While their sleight of hand appears to be working for the moment, just wait until impeachment falls apart due to a dearth of evidence and grand juries begin to be convened.
