Jeanine Pirro is known for going after Democrats with rhetorical guns blazing, however, she recently had some harsh criticism for Republicans and what she sees as their shameful failure to properly defend President Trump against escalating political attacks.
An exchange with House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) during an episode of her Fox News program, Justice with Judge Jeanine, began agreeably enough.
“We have a treaty with Ukraine where we have the right to have our Attorney General Bill Barr discuss with them any information or evidence that involves criminal activity,” Pirro noted.
Scalise agreed, stating, “There was no quid pro quo.” He continued, “President Trump was carrying out his duty to make sure they are rooting out corruption in Ukraine and he was congratulating President Zelensky on a platform of rooting out corruption. Zelensky even thanked President Trump for selling them the Javelin missiles that allows them to stand up to Russia.”
Taking Republicans to task
But it was then that the former judge trained her sights directly on the GOP, complaining, “With all due respect congressman, I’ve got to ask you: you guys don’t fight the way the Democrats fight.”
“You had the goods,” she continued, “when Obama isn’t selling what he agreed to sell and Russia and he’s defending Russia when they are taking out the defense system over the Ukraine.”
Pirro’s comments were apparently in reference to the fact that the Obama administration previously failed to provide Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles, instead focusing on non-lethal forms of assistance.
“It’s frustrating for Americans to watch this,” Pirro concluded.
“They have to get tougher”
This is hardly the first time that Republicans have been perceived as being less aggressive in defense of party colleagues than Democrats, nor is Pirro the only one to raise the issue, as it’s a theme that President Trump has often addressed himself.
“Republicans have to get tougher and fight,” he declared during a cabinet meeting last month. “We have some that are great fighters, but they have to get tougher and fight because the Democrats are trying to hurt the Republican Party for the election.”
Trump has also echoed Pirro’s position that Republicans were historically far too soft on his predecessor in the Oval Office.
“Can you imagine if these Do Nothing Democrat Savages, people like Nadler, Schiff, AOC Plus 3, and many more, had a Republican Party who would have done to Obama what the Do Nothings are doing to me. Oh well, maybe next time!” Trump tweeted back in September.
