Fox’s Chris Wallace has never been a fan of President Donald Trump, but this time, he’s outdone himself.
In a moment that only served to further Fox fans’ concerns about his political leanings, Wallace said Thursday that the House vote to officially authorize Democrats’ impeachment proceedings gave him “goosebumps,” according to Breitbart.
“I can feel goosebumps”
In a 232–196 vote, the House passed on Thursday a resolution crafted by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that outlines procedures for the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry moving forward, according to The New York Times. And during Fox’s live coverage of the event, Wallace had “goosebumps” over what he called a “dramatic” moment in American history.
“As they called the vote, I have to say that I can feel goosebumps,” Wallace said Thursday. “You cannot overstate how dramatic this is and what a decision the Democrats have made to pursue this course.”
Wallace went on to say that the move could “have political downsides,” but “it could have political upsides.”
“Maybe I’m a cockeyed optimist, but I’d like to think there’s a certain amount of feeling on both sides of what they think the Constitution calls for and what their job is in Washington,” Wallace added. “This is the Consitution and the constitutional processes in action, and it’s a dramatic moment.”
“This city is still polarized”
As Wallace noted in his coverage, the Halloween vote fell along party lines, with just two Democrats siding with all House Republicans against the measure. Reps. Jeff Van Drew (NJ) and Collin Peterson (MN) were the lone Democrats to defect; all others expressed support.
“Here you see the party divisions holding,” Wallace reported Thursday, according to The Hill. “All the Democrats with the exception of I think two, voting for this inquiry, all of the Republicans I think with no defections voting against it, so this city is still polarized despite the efforts of Democrats and their closed-door hearings to try to build a case against the president.”
This marked a change from what has historically been the case in similar proceedings, according to Breitbart — including the impeachment of former President Richard Nixon. “There was a bipartisan agreement at that time, even though obviously the impeachment of Richard Nixon was a big deal,” Wallace said. “But a bipartisan agreement that it needed to go to that kind of an investigation.”
At the end of the day, Wallace admitted that the impeachment measure will at least give the American people a chance to decide for themselves whether Trump deserves to stay in the White House.
“What will be interesting to see is what happens when we have open hearings and the American people get to judge and conceivable to put pressure on their representatives and either, ‘Yep, there’s a case against the president’ or ‘Nope, there isn’t,'” Wallace said. “But the Democrats have cast their die now and this is going to roll out over the next two months.”
Indeed, there’s no turning back now.
