Ruth Bader Ginsburg decided to share some rather embarrassing info about Jennifer Lopez and her soon-to-be spouse, Alexander Rodriguez.
During an appearance at the National Book Festival Saturday, the Supreme Court Justice and liberal icon, beloved by fans as the “Notorious RBG,” revealed that the power couple met with her recently to ask for marriage advice. While they might have appreciated the private counsel, they probably weren’t expecting the 86-year old to publicly disclose their anxieties in front of some 4,000 people.
Ginsburg shares embarrassing details
Ginsburg has a celebrity status peered by few Supreme Court justices. To her adoring fans, Ginsburg has been many things: a trailblazing feminist, the Supreme Court’s arch liberal — and apparently, a marriage counselor. Audience members at the Library of Congress event who expected Ginsburg to regale them with tales of her legal career got something a little unexpected when she opened up about an unlikely interaction.
“I was called up about a month or so ago by Jennifer Lopez, and she said she would like to meet me and introduce her fiance Alex Rodriguez. So they came to chambers, and we had a very nice visit,” Ginsburg said, to laughter from the crowd.
The celebrities wanted to ask Ginsburg for advice on how to maintain a happy marriage. Although they haven’t yet tied the knot, media reports of “tension” in their relationship make it unlikely that the couple would appreciate Ginsburg’s storytelling as much as the crowd. J-Lo and Rodriguez got engaged in March after two years of dating, and they reportedly haven’t set a date for their wedding yet.
“She mostly wanted to ask if I had any secret about a happy marriage,” she said. “But now, A-Rod is traveling with her to concerts all over the world.”
RBG’s marriage advice
Ginsburg was married to her husband Martin for 50 years before he died in 2010. Asked about her secret for a happy marriage, Ginsburg shared some advice from her mother-in-law.
“On the day I was married, my mother-in-law — I was married in her home — she took me aside and said she wanted to tell me the secret of a happy marriage,” Ginsburg said. “It helps sometimes to be a little deaf.”
The question came up after the moderator told the crowd that Ginsburg wanted to be introduced as the “J-Lo of jurisprudence.”
The liberal icon, whose recent health scares have attracted public attention, made her first public appearance last week since receiving treatment for a cancerous tumor in her pancreas. The judge received an honorary law degree from the University of Buffalo and cheerfully acknowledged her “Notorious RBG” moniker.
Ginsburg again basked in adoration on Saturday, when she commented on the one thing she has in common with rapper The Notorious B.I.G.
“We were both born and bred in Brooklyn, New York,” Ginsburg said.
