You didn’t think that Hillary Clinton was keeping her hands completely off the upcoming presidential election, did you?
According to a new report from NBC News, Clinton has been assisting Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 campaign since its inception, although they’ve both tried to keep the relationship under wraps.
Clinton teams up with Warren
NBC cited “several people familiar with [Clinton and Warren’s] discussions,” who they said asked to remain anonymous because of the “political sensitivity of private interactions.”
Those sources told NBC that Clinton and Warren “have kept a line of communication open since the Massachusetts senator decided to run for president” several months ago. Warren was the first Democrat to announce her campaign early this year, according to ABC News.
But while NBC reports that the two women have each other’s phone numbers, the details of their conversations remain largely unclear. NBC did not report on how many times the women have spoken to one another or about the content of these talks.
Still, the network’s sources maintain that the contact between Clinton and Warren “has been substantial enough to merit attention.”
Keeping it quiet
To this point, Clinton and Warren have largely been able to keep their discussions out of the public eye, but some have wondered why they’re being so secretive about it.
Part of the reason may be that Clinton has lost her popularity among Democrats, who have moved further to the left since 2016.
On the other hand, Clinton’s reputation as an establishment Democrat may be beneficial for Warren, a progressive who has been trying to align herself with party officials, according to The New York Times. The Massachusetts senator may see this as a necessary move if she wants to earn her party’s nod for the White House.
For now, we can only wait and see if — and how — Warren will use her connection to the former secretary of State to her advantage. She remains one of the top Dems in the polls ahead of 2020, and has consistently been in the No. 3 spot to take on President Donald Trump, behind former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT).
But the question remains: Will Warren’s ties to Clinton give her a boost in the polls? Or will they just serve as a weight around the 70-year-old’s neck?
Only time will tell.
