Beth Stern, wife of radio shock jock Howard Stern, said on Instagram Tuesday that she recently had a breast cancer scare, but that it turned out to be nothing.
The former model and animal rescue activist posted a bikini photo encouraging women to get regular mammograms and giving details about her own experience, Fox News reported.
“I went in for an annual mammogram 6 months ago and they found 1/2 inch growth that needed to be rechecked in 6 months,” Stern, 47, wrote. “Today [Tuesday] was my recheck and it didn’t increase in size. I was a nervous wreck for the past 6 months.”
Stern said her growth was ultimately determined to be a fibroadenoma, which is benign.
“I want you to be here”
Stern then gave an emotional plea to the women in her life. Telling women to get yearly mammograms, she added, “… I think you are all important and worthy and want you to be here as long as you can… love you all.”
She also thanked her doctor, David Angus, and added the hashtags #loveourboobies and #ourmenlovethemtoo.
The Sterns have been married for 10 years and started dating in 2001. Reports earlier this year about the couple having marriage problems turned out to be false, with the couple refuting the claims on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
They have no children together, but Howard Stern has three children with his ex-wife Alison. Beth Stern said on Today in February that the couple has also fostered 900 cats and dogs.
Howard’s own scare
Stern’s husband, radio legend Howard Stern, 65, revealed earlier in the year in a new book that he had a growth on his kidney, but it turned out to be a non-cancerous cyst.
The discovery came after doctors found a low white blood cell count during a routine test. After numerous rounds of further testing, his doctors found the growth and told him there was a 90% chance that it was malignant.
Stern had to take a rare, but brief leave from his show to have surgery to remove the growth. It was only then that he learned it was merely a cyst and not cancerous after all.
Although the recovery was, according to Stern, quite painful, he was nothing but grateful for the outcome and returned to work just five days after his operation.
