Republicans are firing back at Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) sham impeachment threat with calls for her resignation.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) questioned Pelosi’s fitness for office after the Democrat abruptly launched an impeachment inquiry Tuesday evening without any evidence of wrongdoing by President Donald Trump. Declaring that “no one is above the law,” Pelosi dramatically accused Trump of treason over a phone call in which Trump asked Ukraine’s president to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
“At the end of the day, the speaker owes an apology to this nation and I think it’s even a question if she should stay in her job,” McCarthy said, according to The Hill.
A dark day
Pelosi’s decision came as a stunning reversal after months of holding back against restive progressives demanding Trump’s impeachment. But pressure reached a tipping point last week after an anonymous whistleblower claimed that Trump promised a foreign leader something in exchange for investigating the Bidens. The Wall Street Journal then reported that Trump asked Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, and Trump confirmed the report himself.
“This week, the president has admitted to asking the president of Ukraine to take actions which would benefit him politically,” Pelosi said, according to Fox News. “Therefore, today, I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry.”
Republicans have roundly condemned Pelosi’s inquiry as a desperate, last-ditch attempt to overturn the result of the 2016 election. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said that Pelosi undermined “the solemn duty of impeachment” with her cynical gambit, according to Fox News, while McCarthy similarly rebuked the speaker for flouting the rule of law.
“I think what the speaker did was a dark day, not only for this institution, but for the rule of law. And she put this country in harm’s way when it comes to national security and our view around the world,” McCarthy told reporters Wednesday. “She claims he violated [the] law with no proof…simply [because of] the fact that she does not like the outcome of the election.”
The speaker notably decided to launch the impeachment inquiry before even looking at the transcript of the phone call, which Trump released Wednesday, or the whistleblower complaint, which the Trump administration is reportedly planning to release by Thursday.
The Democrats had claimed that Trump dangled military aid to Ukraine, which Trump temporarily froze, as part of a quid pro quo with the country. But the transcript of the phone call released Wednesday showed that no aid — or any quid pro quo — was ever discussed.
“She’s no longer the speaker”
Disgracefully, Democrats have continued to double down while shifting the goalposts, saying that no evidence of a quid pro quo is necessary to justify impeachment. Indeed, Democrats and the media are now casting doubt on the veracity of the transcript — which was not verbatim — while demanding the full whistleblower complaint.
It’s quite clear that nothing will ever be enough to satisfy the Dems. In their eyes, Trump’s crime was getting elected, and he deserves to be impeached for that reason alone. The Ukraine scandal has provided Pelosi with a fresh pretext to justify another attempted coup against the president, now that the Russia collusion story has been proven to be a complete fraud.
But as Pelosi doubles down on impeachment, Republicans are rallying behind Trump after the phone transcript was released, saying it proves the Democrats’ bad faith, according to The Washington Examiner. For his part, Trump vented his frustration with Pelosi on Wednesday, saying that he no longer views her as the speaker of the House and that “all she’s thinking about is” impeachment.
“She’s been taken over by the radical left, the whole Democrat Party,” Trump said, according to USA Today. “Nancy Pelosi, as far as I’m concerned, is no longer the speaker of the House.”
