Willie Nelson cancels tour dates due to ‘breathing problem’

Willie Nelson canceled the August dates of his tour because of a “breathing problem,” but he expects to back on stage by September.

The outlaw country legend told his fans on Twitter Wednesday that his tour would be interrupted by a health issue, but promised to return. He said Thursday that he will perform again on September 6 in Gilford, New Hampshire.

“Update: Willie is resting and feeling better. The tour will resume on September 6 in Gilford, NH. Thanks to all the fans for the continued,” he tweeted Thursday.

Nelson cancels August tour dates

Nelson had finished a show in Toledo, Ohio when he alerted followers that he would be canceling his tour. The singer apologized to his fans and promised to return.

“To my fans, I’m sorry to cancel my tour, but I have a breathing problem that I need to have my doctor check out. I’ll be back. Love, Willie,” he tweeted.

But on Thursday, his publicist Elain Shock said that Nelson was recovering in Texas and planned to finish the tour after an August respite. Six August shows have been canceled. They are in: Grand Rapids, Mich., Huntington, W.V., Florence, S.C., Charlottesville, Va., Greenville, S.C. and Greensboro, N.C.

“He will be back on the road in September,” Shock said.

Farm Aid show still on

The tour was originally scheduled to run straight through November. Nelson’s rotating guest line-up includes Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and Bonnie Raitt.

Nelson’s Farm Aid concert on September 21 in Wisconsin with Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Raitt, is still on. Nelson hasn’t missed a Farm Aid show since he co-founded the benefit concert with Young and Mellencamp in 1985. Over the years, the Farm Aid concerts have raised over $57 million to assist family farmers who were struggling to keep their land.

Nelson, who is noted for his copious consumption of marijuana, has a history of emphysema.

The tireless 86-year-old country singer has shown few signs of slowing down, but he has taken occasional breaks from extensive touring because of respiratory issues.

He canceled his Outlaw Music Festival performance last summer, and he also cut a concert short in Salt Lake City in 2017.
