Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) indicated that she would be willing to use executive orders to confiscate guns if she becomes president.
“I’m actually prepared to take executive action to put in place rules that improve this situation,” she told the Washington Examiner. “I also have as part of my background and experience working on this issue, when I was attorney general [of California], and we put resources into allowing law enforcement to actually knock on the doors of people who were on two lists.”
Harris explained that her team combined lists of those who were convicted of a crime that prohibited them from owning a gun and those who were considered a danger to themselves.
“Then we sent law enforcement out to take those guns, because, listen, we have to deal with this on all levels, but we have to do this with a sense of urgency,” Harris concluded.
Weapons grab
This is not the first time Harris has said she would confiscate guns should she reach the Oval Office. In a CNN town hall in April, Harris asserted that she would take executive action to close gun loopholes, implement universal background checks, and hold gun dealers and sellers liable for victims’ losses if Congress didn’t pass laws to do so in the first 100 days of her presidency.
“There are people in Washington, D.C., supposed leaders, who have failed to have the courage to reject a false choice which says you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” Harris said during the town hall.
Public opinion seems to slightly favor more restrictions on guns, with a majority of respondents in a February Reuters poll saying they would like tighter requirements for firearms registration and safeguards designed to keep guns away from the mentally ill.
Media frenzy surrounding mass shooting events is often designed to create a sense of panic among the citizenry which could, in turn, build support for stronger gun control legislation. However, what pundits on the left routinely fail to address is the fact that all too many of these tragedies occur in gun-free zones which render potential victims unable to respond in kind when an attack occurs.
Alarming ignorance
Harris and other Democrats may have convinced some of the public that they need gun control, but it’s a bait and switch that will lead to criminals being the only ones who have guns. Law-abiding citizens will be left defenseless.
Right now, Harris only claims to want to take guns away from convicts and the mentally ill — both of whom are already prohibited by law from possessing guns — but the actual Democrat agenda is to disarm the public. They don’t believe anyone needs guns, except maybe themselves and their bodyguards.
As the NRA points out, a lot of Harris’ proposals, such as prohibiting the importation of what she categorizes as “AR15-style assault weapons,” have already been implemented. She doesn’t even seem to know the details of gun control legislation already on the books.
This represents a truly dangerous combination of empty promises and ignorance of the law that American voters must reject.
