Any time there is an ax to grind about racism, we can expect former First Lady Michelle Obama to be there to speak her mind.
This time, Fox News reports that Mrs. Obama went after those who believe being president of the United States is an easy job because a black man did it.
“It’s a hard job”
Obama’s remarks came during the 2019 Essence Festival at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orelans on Saturday.
“I guess it’s kind of like if the black guy can do it, anybody can do it — and that’s not true,” Obama told host Gayle King after remarking that her husband, Barack, made the job “look too easy.”
“It’s a hard job,” she added, according to CBS News. The former first lady went on to say that while in office, she often felt she was seen as “an angry black woman who was emasculating her husband.”
America fears “the strength of a black woman,” she said, according to Fox News. “We all struggle with that, people of color, working-class folks, women of color — people try to define us in a negative way before we get a chance to get out there and tell our own stories.”
Jabs at Trump
But Michelle Obama didn’t keep the interview to just talk of her husband’s accomplishments. Mrs. Obama also used the opportunity to take a not-so-veiled jab at President Donald Trump.
“The leader of the free world with a tweet can start a war, can crush an economy, can change the future of our children,” Obama said. She went on to say that “a president” should have “deep seriousness and focus…with a clear base of facts and ideas.”
She may not have referred to Trump by name — but her insinuation was no secret.
Obama’s reference of Trump came after the former first lady revealed that moving out of the White House on Trump’s inauguration day was more of an emotional day than she says many people realize.
“The truth is, on that day I was moving my children out of the only house they had really grown up in,” Obama said, according to Fox News. “I think that gets lost on people.”
“Divorced Dad” Donald
No doubt it was an emotional day for the Obamas — but not just because their family was moving out. Mrs. Obama has had no qualms about attacking her husband’s predecessor in the past.
In April, the former first lady likened Trump to America’s unwanted “divorced dad.”
“We come from a broken family, we are a little unsettled. Sometimes you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick. That is what America is going through. We are living with divorced dad,” Obama said. Her comments earned her backlash from single dads across America, who defended their contributions to their families.
For his part, President Trump has not responded to Michelle Obama’s most recent criticism.
