Flashback: Obama allowed liberal rally at WWII memorial while veterans were denied access

A revealing video shared exclusively by blogger Dennis Michael Lynch provides a stunning reminder of how former President Barack Obama allowed — and then-Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) attended — a pro-immigration rally on the National Mall the same day that the World War II Memorial in the same location was closed to veterans.

The rally occurred during a government shutdown in 2013. It is customary that the mall area would be closed during a government shutdown because it is part of a national park, but Obama opened the mall specially for the immigrant rally, while declining to allow veterans access to the memorial on the same day.

Obama’s plan gone awry

The move by Obama was seen as the start of a series of attacks on veterans by the former president.

“The President of the United States erected these barricades so that veterans would feel pain,” DennisMichaelLynch.com team member Larry Ward said at the time. “He thought that they would blame Republicans for shutting down the government.”

Indeed, although news articles from the time show that a majority of Americans did blame Republicans for shutting down the government in 2013, the shutdown became a rallying cry for Republicans that pushed them to regain the Senate and increase their majority in the House in 2014. After the 2014 midterms, Republicans had the largest majorities in both houses in almost 100 years.

Republicans also gained governorships and state legislative majorities in 2014. It was almost like the country finally got tired of Democrats and their destructive policies — including an unwritten but painfully clear disdain for the military and veterans.

Obama thought that ignoring veterans would go unnoticed or would gain him fans among his base. Instead, his treatment of veterans became one of a number of reasons for proud patriots in his base to leave him in disgust.

Standing up for veterans

For her part, Nancy Pelosi had the audacity on that day in 2013 to claim that the veterans’ memorial was open for them to enter. Lynch himself confronted her to ask whether she would go to the memorial and see if it was open, but she refused.

Lynch then removed the barricades and allowed veterans and passersby to enter the memorial. The next day, however, the barricades were back in place and veterans were barred from entry.

A movement started after this incident to bring attention to Obama’s treatment of veterans, with thousands of people gathering at the memorial location to encourage Obama to give veterans access. Some veterans put shutdown signs in the trash and cut zip ties holding barriers closed so that veterans could gather to honor their fallen fellow soldiers.

Meanwhile, media pundits said the protests were “about nothing” and said that the memorial was the least of government’s functions. But their comments only fueled the fire of veterans’ anger toward their elected (Democrat) leaders’ actions.

Trump honors military

In stark contrast to his predecessor, President Donald Trump has proudly honored the military and veterans every chance he gets in the two-and-a-half years since he took office. In just one recent example, he shook the hands of all 1,000 graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy after delivering the commencement address.

Trump clearly understands the importance of the military throughout this country’s history and its pivotal role in securing our nation’s security today. As the great U.S. President Ronald Reagan said, “If we forget what we did, we won’t know who we are.”
