Columnist: Joe Biden’s endless scandals are ruining his once-comfortable lead ahead of 2020

Joe Biden is squandering his comfortable lead in the Democratic primary with a combination of complacency and ineptitude, writes John Nolte in Breitbart.

Having assumed the title of the preemptive nominee, Biden is pretty much ignoring his rivals, campaigning at a leisurely pace, and generally doing what he can to stay out of the spotlight. There’s just one problem, Nolte says: Biden keeps screwing up.

Between cracking jokes about inappropriately touching children to plagiarizing his policy platform, Biden is imperiling what ought to be a fairly easy path to the nomination.

If history is any indication, Biden may crash and burn like he did in 1988 and 2008.

Biden’s blunders

With a comfortable lead in the Democratic primary, Joe Biden has basically one job: don’t screw up. But even this is proving beyond his capability.

The latest scandal is the product of pure laziness: Biden was caught plagiarizing his policy platforms for climate change and education this week. Shortly after revealing his climate change plan Tuesday, it was revealed that Biden lifted text wholesale from environmentalist groups without giving credit.

Then it was reported that Biden stole text in his education plan.

The next scandal is more disturbing. After his campaign appeared to survive allegations of inappropriately touching women and girls, Biden is back at it again, and this time he’s cracking jokes about his touchiness.

Hurting himself

The common denominator in all these mess-ups is Biden himself. The same Biden who was forced to drop out of his first presidential campaign in 1987 over a plagiarism scandal, the same Biden who narrowly survived a groping scandal, doesn’t seem to have learned from his mistakes.

Frankly, what is wrong with this man? Even Democrats agree with President Donald Trump that China is a rising threat to American interests, but Biden is mysteriously downplaying the threat.

“Our workers are literally three times as productive as workers in the Far East, in Asia. They’re three times as productive. And so what are we worried about?” Biden said Tuesday.

And with a growing conflict of interest scandal involving his son Hunter’s dealings in China and Ukraine comes, Biden isn’t doing himself any favors by staking out this bizarre position.

Will Biden last?

For now, Biden is benefiting from the mercy of a relatively friendly media establishment. But Nolte predicts that things will only get worse for the Democrat once the campaign kicks into gear.

When that happens, Biden’s veneer of respectability will peel away along with the platitudes about our better angels to reveal what was obvious to those paying attention: Biden is too old and boring to excite the Democratic Party.

If he does win the Democratic primary, that says a lot more about the Democrats’ talent pool than it does about the former vice president.
